DescriptionEdward Augustus Tyler was born in Boston in 1815 and trained as a watchmaker before he moved to New Orleans by 1841. Tyler worked in a partnership retailing watches and jewelry in the early 1840s. In 1844, he opened his own business. His jewelry store located at 115 Canal Street flourished after the Civil War. There, he employed silversmiths, jewelers, and watchmakers to repair jewelry and create some custom pieces. He also often visited New York City for merchandise and was an agent for major manufacturers.
