DescriptionThe front of this plate features a view of birds in a landscape full of blooming plants. On the reverse, it bears the date of 1842, when China and Great Britain were engaged in the First Opium War (1839–42), and the initials "SB" likely for the original owner. In the wake of the war, both Great Britain and the United States received significant trade concessions in treaties with China, opening new ports to trade.
