DescriptionVirginia native John Mitchell received his education at Edinburgh University and returned to Virginia to practice medicine. Mitchell was also interested in botany and exotic plants, which brought him into contact with George Montagu Dunk, Earl of Halifax and First Lord of the Board of Trade and Plantations. By 1749, Dunk recruited Mitchell to make an extensive map of the British and French colonies in North America, at a time when some believed territorial compromise with the French was possible. Mitchell’s map remained an important touchstone for boundary disputes into the 1800s.
