1972 Stephen Shore and a friend set out for Amarillo, Texas from the East
Coast. Using a large format 8˝ x 10˝ camera, Shore took pictures along the way,
which transform seemingly banal places through their careful use of color,
light, and composition. Shore published this group of pictures in Uncommon Places, about which MoMA
Curator John Szarkowski wrote, “A Shore picture is very classical in spirit, very
quiet, very poised, very much at rest, very much having to do with the moments
between events…”
