Evans’s principal subject was the vernacular—roadside stands, cheap cafés,
advertisements, simple bedrooms, and small-town streets. George’s Place depicts a roadside sandwich shop of no particular
distinction, yet the viewer is convinced that this is how George’s Place would
have looked had the viewer been there, too.
