DescriptionEnglish caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson conceived of The Tour of Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque as a satire on the works of minister, artist, and art theorist William Gilpin. Gilpin wrote extensively on his travels, picturesque scenery, and on his theory of picturesque beauty. The Tour of Doctor Syntax follows the protagonist, also a minister, on his search for picturesque beauty as he is beset with ridiculous obstacles.
ProvenanceMrs. David Bland; given to MFAH, 1976.
