Joyce Neimanas’s artistic experimentations stretch well beyond the confines of any one medium. Using advertisements, art reproductions, photographs, painting, and comic books, Neimanas creates humorous collages that explore contemporary gender roles. Shadows is made up of 12 individual scenes. In each one, a female protagonist is terrorized either by the dark form of her own shadow or the specter of another character. Neimanas’s work gives form to a host of anxieties that arise from being a woman in the world.
