DescriptionThis plate is from a service owned by Salem, Massachusetts, merchant Elias Hasket Derby, whose ship Grand Turk was the first from New England to sail to China after the United States began direct trade with that nation in 1785. During the Revolutionary War, ships in Derby’s fleet acted as privateers. At the war’s end, he was well positioned and equipped to take advantage of the new trading opportunities with China.
