preparation for manned missions to the moon, seven unmanned “Surveyor” spacecrafts
were sent to test the soft landing technology, demonstrate the communications
systems, and survey the material and topography of the lunar surface. Launched
on May 30, 1966, Surveyor I touched down on June 2, and over the next six weeks
it beamed more than 21,000 images back to Earth, where members of the U.S.
Geological Survey and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory photographed the images
displayed on their monitors and assembled the individual shots into a mosaic of
the lunar landscape.
