Description

A neighbor’s living room, spied furtively one day when the door was open, caught Humberto Mayol’s eye. He persuaded its occupants—an older couple and their twenty-something son—to allow him to make their portraits, each in their chosen place. The woman posed beneath walls filled with pictures—a few framed family snapshots and diplomas, a photo- graph of the woman’s younger self in military uniform from the revolutionary years, and then a personal pan- theon that represented her belief system—portraits of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Camilo Cienfuegos, and José Martí alongside Marx and Lenin, and, largest of all, Jesus.
