Object Type
This image by Humberto Mayol comes from a project on Cuban
identity begun by him, José Ney and Carlos Mayol. Trained
as a journalist, Humberto Mayol consciously avoided the grand statements found
in 1960s photojournalism. Instead, his images are intimate, lyrical, and even
irreverent. His eye was drawn to the striking juxtapositions of daily life,
from domestic objects of worship to a stone bust on the floor, an echo of how monuments
were taken off their pedestals after the revolution.
ProvenanceThe artist; purchased by MFAH, 1994.
