Whether of landscapes, everyday objects, or portraits, Harry Callahan’s photographic works exemplify the experimental philosophy and formal abstraction of Modernist photography. In his portrait of the architect Bob Fine, Callahan plays with the boundaries of portraiture. Rather than highlight the face of his subject, Callahan presents Fine as a miniature form at center of the composition in a swath of light between two looming structures, a nod to Fine’s profession. Despite its unusual approach, this photograph appeared in a Life magazine profile of Fine in place of a traditional portrait.
