DescriptionChinese export porcelain in this pattern became popular in the United States in the early 1800s. This pattern and others of similar configuration is named Fitzhugh because of its association with a blue and white service ordered around 1780 by Thomas Fitzhugh, who served from 1786 to 1800 in Guangzhou (formerly named Canton) as a director of the British East India Company. Fitzhugh wares were made in several colors. Blue was most common; the mulberry color of this example is much rarer.
Provenance[Ginsburg and Levy, New York]; purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Harris Masterson III, Houston; given to MFAH, 1970.
