DescriptionThe Rauenstein Porcelain Manufactory was a founded by three members of the Greiner family: Johann Georg, Johann Friedrich, and Christian Daniel Siegmund—in Thuringia. This region in southeastern Germany is noted for its ceramic production. In 1760, fifty years after the creation of porcelain at Meissen, it became feasible to produce hard-paste porcelain in Thuringia. This teacup is decorated with a portrait of Zachary Taylor.
Provenance[Ginsburg & Levy, New York]; donated to Halcyon Foundation Auction; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, 1969; given to MFAH, 1969.
