DescriptionDeeply interested in the ways the natural environment has been transformed by human industry, Edward Burtynsky photographed granite quarries where the extraction of stone has left remarkably vast and geometrically precise voids in the land. Both the scale of the landscape and the mining operations carried out within it are disorienting and the result of a centuries-long process by which evolving technology and economic conditions allowed for the removal and transportation of massive amounts of stone. Now abandoned, human implements and structures are still present on the snow-capped terraces of the Rock of Ages quarry.
