DescriptionJoseph Lewis Hogg (1806–1862), father of Texas governor James Stephen Hogg and grandfather of Bayou Bend founder Ima Hogg, was born in Georgia and in 1818 moved to Alabama where his family established a plantation. There he studied law, served in the militia, and became involved in politics. In 1839, he relocated to Texas, where he established a law practice near Nacogdoches. He served in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Texas and later fought in the Mexican-American War. By the time of the Civil War, Hogg was significantly wealthy; the 1860 census recorded that he enslaved twenty-six individuals. He served briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate army, dying of dysentery in 1862.
