DescriptionMuch of Benjamin Cuyp’s work consists of variations on a few dramatic themes, such as the Annunciation to the Shepherds, which feature sudden bursts of light and were often painted in monochromatic shades of brown. He was an important follower of Rembrandt, although they had no direct contact, and this composition derives from Rembrandt’s etching of the subject from 1633.
