DescriptionIn 1799, Henry Fuseli opened a temporary exhibition called the "Milton Gallery," consisting of forty paintings he had made illustrating the poems of the great 17th-century English writer John Milton. Number 27 (the number is visible here at the lower left) is drawn from Book XII of Milton's Paradise Lost. The project was not the financial success for which Fuseli had hoped, and many of the paintings, including this one, remained unsold until after his death.
