DescriptionThe Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican State of Coahuila, between forces led by Zachary Taylor and Antonio López de Santa Anna, took place on February 22 and 23, 1847. Santa Anna withdrew his troops, leaving the field to the surprised Americans. The outcome helped bolster Taylor’s reputation, helping propel him to the White House in 1849. The English-born artist of this scene, Frances Flora “Fanny” Bond Palmer, would later find employment and considerable success with Currier and Ives.
