DescriptionAs a student at Chicago’s Institute of Design, Arthur Siegel was greatly influenced by the flexible and expansive conception of photography promoted by its director, László Moholy-Nagy, a former master at the Bauhaus, the revolutionary art school closed by the Nazis in 1933. By 1948, when he made this picture, Siegel had become head of the institute’s photography department. As visually puzzling as his picture is, it is in fact a straightforward photograph of a woman clothed only in the light and shadow of a projected image.
