The only part of this horse that moves now is its shadow. In my mind horses walk, trot, gallop, roll and more. Originally this weathervane horse rode the wind; carousel horses went round and round, up and down. I expect that the small horse in this image, once part of a toy, moved too. Although it's hard to say exactly why I made this photograph twenty years ago, I imagine I wanted to make these horses fly beyond the iron heaviness of a bit, away from the pins that would fix them like bugs, and beyond the echoes of human beings fixed on paper."
