Description

Depicting sites significant to the Korean War, Taedong Kim’s PLANETES project began when the photographer noticed a blurred building in a picture he had made of the night sky using an equatorial mount. While this equipment holds stars in a fixed position during long exposures despite the earth’s rotation, it results in the blurring of terrestrial subjects, which Kim considers “shaken traces of history.” Depicted here is Nodongdangsa in Cheorwon County—an imposing structure built by the North prior to the war to serve as the Communist Party headquarters and later as a prison and execution site.
