Description

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was not only the famous author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University, and an ordained deacon, he was also a talented and prolific photographer, primarily of portraits and most notably of children. He set his young subjects at ease with stories, games, and magic tricks, and photography was part of their shared entertainment. Carroll’s most frequently photographed subject was Alexandra (“Xie”) Kitchin (1864–1925), the daughter of a colleague and old friend from Carroll’s student days at Oxford.
