Marcelo Montecino is one of the few photographers to consistently document Chilean political events—from the 1970 election of the socialist president Salvador Allende, through the military coup that established a dictatorship under General Augusto Pinochet, to the hard-won return of democracy in 1990. This image, taken in the first weeks of democratic rule, presents a suppressed feeling of hope. The clothes lines, with the irregular rhythm of clothespins, bring to mind the ubiquitous fencing and wire divisions of the Pinochet landscape. Yet, the work’s title, Notes, recasts these clothes lines as a musical staff, and what was once symbolic of control becomes a gentle song of freedom.
