ProvenanceThe artist, 1894; Dr. Ronan Taburet, 1926-2022 (stamp on verso) [1]; [Ader, Paris, Collection Ronan Taburet-Estampes et Dessins-Pont-Aven, Nabis, Symbolisme-Partie, 21 September 2023, lot 331]; [Susan Schulman Fine Prints, Inc., New York, 2023]; purcahsed by MFAH, 2023.

[1] Doctor Taburet, who was from Northern Finistère, died in 2022. He particularly collected works from the Pont-Aven school, such as Gauguin, Emile Bernard, and Seguin as well as the Nabis and the symbolist (Bonnard, Maurice Denis, and Vuillard. He also purchased works by Breton artists, such as Cottet, Dezaunay, Dauchez and Maufra. Taburet is the last of a family of four children of a wine merchant from Saint-Renan and a Red Cross nurse. His mother died just a few weeks after his birth. His father then remarried and from this new union, two half-sisters were added to the family. Unfortunately, his father died in 1931. Orphaned, Ronan spent his childhood between home in Saint-Renan and school in Brest. In June 1940, his older brother Alain went to England and joined the Free French Cadets school. For his part, Ronan Taburet continued his studies in Brest at Bon-Secours, rue du Bois d’Amour. With his brother a boarder, Ronan stayed with his aunt in her apartment on rue Foy. With the start of the German occupation, the English bombings began. During the air alerts over Brest, Ronan found refuge in the shelter of a cellar on rue Colbert. During a bombing, he was almost killed. With the closure of schools in Brest in 1941, Ronan found Saint-Renan and the canton's troop of road scouts.

Having grown up with patriotic values, Ronan Taburet lived this period with fervor. Part of their house being requisitioned by the Germans, he engaged in his first acts of Resistance by gradually tearing up a propaganda poster which adorned their house. He also went through the attic to enter the German premises at night to steal the pieces of the board games used by the Germans. With his brothers and sisters, there was no shortage of small acts of provocation towards the occupier, such as the day when attending a parade in the streets of Saint-Renan, the siblings pivoted to turn their backs on the Wehrmacht. In October 1943, his older brother Pol (see portfolio) in turn left the country and went to North Africa via Spain, to enlist in the French Army of the Liberation.

Some time later, Ronan Taburet was contacted by a fellow scout; Yves Denniel who asked him to collect information on German installations. Ronan Taburet accepted and began to monitor German activities in Brest, Saint-Renan and Le Conquet. It listed D.C.A positions and bunkered along the coast or in the open countryside. He noted vehicle registrations and was attentive to troop movements. Ronan Taburet also focused his attention on lighthouses, radio antennas and coastal works. Finally, he served as a liaison agent between Brest and Saint-Renan. The information collected was transmitted to Jean Dréano of the F2 network. In April 1944, contact was broken with the network, its leader having left the sector to go to Africa. After the announcement of the landing, the scouts were called upon by one of their leaders to carry out sabotage on the telephone lines and removed the indicator plates placed by the Germans. Undoubtedly considered too young to fight, Ronan Taburet and other scouts were not summoned to the maquis in the first days of August 1944. Through rumors, he learned that the Resistance was gathering in Brélès or Lanildut, he decided to go there to be enlisted. On the road, he passed near the German truck ambushed on August 10, 1944. On the spot, Ronan Taburet was redirected towards Tréouergat, a gathering place for volunteers. Finally reaching the maquis, they agreed to enlist him as a soldier in the French Interior Forces, and he was then given a Lebel rifle. Ronan Taburet was then headed further south to join the 3rd Group of the 2nd Section of the F.F.I Company of Saint-Renan on August 20, 1944.
