his outdoor nudes on a favorite rocky beach on the East Sussex coast, Bill
Brandt wrote that although he no longer used the wide-angle Kodak camera with
which he had begun the nude series, “I continued to let the [camera] lenses
discover images for me. It is difficult to explain how I took the last
photographs. They were perhaps chance pictures; unexpected combinations of
shapes and landscapes. I watched them appear on the ground glass and exposed.
It was as simple as that.”
