Description

Gory originally presented this series—perhaps the most prominent example of experimental Cuban photography of the 1980s—as an installation of nine photographs. Eight are photomontages in which a pool ladder in the fore- ground gives access to an alternate world in the middle distance; the final image presents the empty pool, with an aura of abandonment. When first shown, each photo- graph was accompanied by a text fragment from Michael Ende’s The Mirror in the Mirror: A Labyrinth (1984). The first of those phrases began: “Like a swimmer who has gotten lost under a layer of ice, I look for a place to emerge, but there is no place. All life long I swim holding my breath.”

 

Esta serie —quizás el ejemplo más sobresaliente de la fotografía experimental cubana de los 80— se presentó originalmente como una instalación de nueve fotografías. Ocho de ellas son fotomontajes donde una escalera de piscina en primer plano conduce a un mundo alternativo en la distancia, y la imagen final muestra la misma piscina vacía, con un aura de abandono. En aquella exposición, cada fotografía iba acompañada de un frag- mento del texto de Michael Ende El espejo en el espejo: Un laberinto (1984). La primera frase comenzaba: “Como un nadador que se ha perdido bajo una capa de hielo, busco un lugar para emerger, pero no hay lugar. Toda mi vida nado conteniendo la respiración”.
