Description

Depicting a female nude model surrounded by a group of male students in the studio of François Flameng at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, this picture highlights the longstanding culture of arts education during the first part of the 20th century. Flanked by paintings of the model, the group was photographed after a live modeling session, and the stark contrast between the nude woman and finely clothed men emphasizes the male gaze as it refracts from model to canvas to camera. Additionally, the picture illustrates the ways in which the painting students have self-fashioned themselves as artists and the apparent continuity of studio practices across time in the French academy.
