Dawoud Bey creates poignant meditations on race, visibility, and power, chronicling underrepresented and misunderstood communities. In Class Pictures, he turned his attention to teenagers, a population he felt was misjudged. He invited teens to write autobiographical statements and then made tender, collaborative portraits of them. Here, Bey captured Shalanta’s beaming smile that matched her sunny outlook.
