Following the murder of George Floyd and numerous acts of racial violence, photojournalist Louie Palu spent much of the summer of 2020 photographing Black Lives Matter protestors. Palu’s picture of the felled statue of Confederate general Albert Pike, marked with spray paint and a noose around his neck in Judicial Square, Washington, D.C., depicts one of numerous acts of tearing down Confederate monuments carried out on June 19, 2020, in recognition of Juneteenth and to protest racism.
