DescriptionJohann Christoph Heyne was born in 1715 in Saxony, and served there as an apprentice. He later worked as a journeyman in Sweden.  In 1742, Heyne traveled to the Moravian settlement at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and was active in Moravian educational and missionary work.  He eventually settled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  Much of Heyne’s pewter was made for ecclesiastical use.  The flaring, cylindrical form of this flagon and its cherub-head feet relate it to examples made in southern Germany and Switzerland, while its spout has Scandinavian antecedents, making it a reflection of Heyne’s heritage and career.
