ProvenanceCollection François Heugel (Paris 1922-2010) (Lugt 3373), after 1941-20101; [Galerie Paul Prouté, Paris], as of 2010; [Susan Schulman Fine Art, Inc., New York] as of 2021-2022; purchased by MFAH, 2022

1 Born in Paris on August 22, 1922, into a large, prosperous family of music publishers and collectors, François Heugel inherited his passion for collecting from his grandparents, Jules Lazar and Henri Huegel, the latter of whom amassed paintings, enamels, sculptures, and objets d’art. François showed a special interest in prints and began accruing a fine collection in 1941. By 2004, François’ collection encompassed more than 2,000 original and reproduction prints from all time periods and countries, but it centered in particular on his strong holdings of 18th-century prints. Upon François death in 2010, François’ print collection was acquired in its entirety by Paris’ Galerie Paul Prouté.
