Description

The preeminent late-Victorian painter of portraits, history, and allegorical subjects, George Frederic Watts (1817–1904), lived as a sort of artist-in-residence at Little Holland House, the home of Julia Margaret Cameron’s sister Sara Prinsep, née Pattle, and after that, at the Prinseps’ home in Freshwater. “He came to stay for three days, he stayed thirty years,” said Prinsep. At Little Holland House, Watts was a central figure in the bohemian life of “Pattledom” and a magnet for artistic salons for which their home became renowned, and he became a deeply admired artistic mentor for Cameron.

ProvenanceGiven by the artist to her daughter Julia and son-in-law Charles Norman; by descent to his son Archibald Cameron Norman; by descent to his son Charles Lloyd Norman; by descent to his son Charles Wake Norman; by descent to his son to William Norman; by descent to his son Stephen Norman; [consigned to Hans P.
