Best known for his collages and assemblages, Bruce Connor regularly applied a single fingerprint to his finished works instead of his signature. After being fingerprinted by San José State University (SJSU) as an incoming lecturer in 1962, Conner requested the return of his fingerprints after processing, arguing that they were a work of art. The school objected. Conner turned the resulting 12-year debate with SJSU into PRINTS. Containing letters, transcripts of meetings with school officials, photocopies, fingerprints, photographs, a packing list, and a key, PRINTS merges conceptual art and humor while provoking questions about the value of personal identity.
