In his Self-Portraits series, Chris Iduma uses his camera to consider the ways in which Nigerian women have been treated in a hyper-masculine culture. Positioning one man and one woman to give the appearance of a single, elongated body, Iduma recasts both masculine and feminine into one symbiotic body. These images are not traditional self-portraits but rather serve to question the ways in which cultural standards and ideologies about men’s and women’s roles contribute to a sense of self and others in the world. Iduma notes that he is “providing an experimental chance to challenge one’s perceptions, perspectives and assumptions.”
