Alberto Korda, who had reason to know, once told Pedro Abascal, “People remember photographers for one picture, and you’ve already taken it,” referring to this image. Asked if he thought of his documentary work as a vehicle for social change, Abascal demurred, “If somebody stands in front of my picture and laughs . . . [and] in that single instant, I changed something in that person, then the work will matter.”
