Commenting that “My work is about a world we know exists but can’t really see,” Salle Werner Vaughn draws inspiration from her close study of nature and Greco-Roman mythology. Night is one of a series of paintings devoted to the times of the day. It can also be related to Nyx, the primordial personification of Night, who was the daughter of Chaos and the Mother of Thanatos (Death), Hypnos (Sleep), and Erebus (Darkness), endowed with the power to create and destroy, all of which are hinted at in the tenebrous tones of the composition and its bursts of light.
