Description

Depicting more than is typically found in studio portraiture of the time, this ambrotype presents rich details of a large family and their staff, their home and surrounding landscape, and even their political affiliations. Visible in the center-left of the image is a Union flag with a 36-star design that became the official flag of the United States on July 4, 1865.
