The photojournalist and filmmaker Mary Ellen Mark brought a profound humanism to an astonishingly diverse range of subjects and locations, from Indian circus performers to homeless Americans, and from Hollywood stars to this debonair mustachioed man in Türkiye. In the five decades following this photograph, she would travel the world, shoot for major magazines, and publish 20 books. She took this image while traveling as a Fulbright Fellow, fresh from graduate school. Already evident is a quality that would mark her entire career, a capacity to engage genuinely and sympathetically with her subjects.
ProvenanceJordan and Devinah Finn, Houston; given to MFAH, 2020.
