Object Type
DescriptionRichard Hunt has long been admired for
his gestural, experimental works in steel
that evoke the surreal and the fantastic,
blending natural and architectonic forms.
Untitled balances the dramatic vertical of the
wooden column and found metal elements
with expansive lines of welded steel that
extend horizontally into space as they coil
around a wooden gourd. A distinctive early
work, this sculpture established Hunt’s
formal vocabulary—combining disparate
forms and biomorphic shapes—for which
he later would become known
ProvenanceThe artist; [Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago]; purchased by the MFAH, 2020.
