Trenton Doyle Hancock constructs his work around narratives
that weave together autobiography, myth, and popular culture to address universal
concepts of light and dark, good and evil. Color Flash for Chat and Chew, Paris
Texas in Seventy-Two depicts a multihued forest saturated with color, for Hancock
the world’s most nurturing substance and an antidote to racism. At the same time,
the title pays homage to the “chat and chew” visits his aunt hosted for friends
and family in Paris, Texas, in the 1970s.
ProvenanceThe artist; [Jaime Odabasian, Miami]; commissioned by MFAH, 2019.
