DescriptionThough Giorgio Sommer was born in Germany, his entire photographic career was centered in Italy, where he opened a studio in Naples that flourished for a half century. This photograph depicts a Neapolitan Bersagliere, a member of the Royal Italian Army. This elite corps of sharpshooters relied on the plume of feathers on their hat to provide shade for their shooting eye. The careful hand coloring of the print emphasizes the feathers and other distinctive elements of this proud hero’s uniform.
