Object Type
DescriptionHighly venerated but rarely displayed, the Holy Shroud of Turin is believed by faithful Catholics to be the burial cloth of Christ and to bear his image divinely imprinted as if by photography. When the miraculous relic was displayed in 1931 for the first time since 1898, Giuseppe Enrie was commissioned to carefully photograph it in the presence of a priest and scientist. In subsequent years, his photographs were widely distributed as sacred souvenirs.
Provenance[Galerie Bassenge, Berlin, 19th-21st Century Photography, June 5, 2019, Lot 4129]; purchased by MFAH, 2019.
