Object Type
DescriptionThe Bauhaus theater master Oskar Schlemmer’s 1922 “Triadic Ballet” and his 1927–28 “Stick Dance,” shown in this photograph, pushed choreography into the modern era. With long sticks lashed to the dancer’s arms, legs, and torso, the dance became a shifting display of geometric lines, described by Schlemmer as “mathematics in motion, the mechanics of points and swivels, and the exactitudes of rhythmics and gymnastics.”
Provenance[Galerie Bassenge, Berlin, 19th-21st Century Photography, June 5, 2019, Lot 4085]; purchased by MFAH, 2019.
