Description

Norman Parkinson’s photograph After Van Dogen: Adele Collins in an Otto Lucas Toque re-creates
a well known work of art. The

original painting, which is on view in the Beck Galleries of this Museum, was inspired by the fashionable
choices of the sitter.

Regarding his model, Van Dongen noted, “Putting on that red hat (called a ‘Corn Poppy’) was
entirely her idea. You might say

it was her instinct.” The painting was instantly popular and was
reproduced in many forms,

from postcards and magazine covers to posters and prints. The
fashionable painting made a

perfect reference for Parkinson’s photo of a red Otto Lucas
hat.
