Matthew Shain created the series Post-Monuments following national discussions and protests surrounding the legacy of the Civil War and public monuments commemorating the Confederacy—many of which were erected in the 20th-century as a means to uphold racist ideologies of Confederate remembrance. As these monuments were removed from public spaces, Shain photographed the empty plinths and platforms, drawing attention to and encouraging discourse about the voids left in public space and now open to new possibilities of memorialization and community usage.
