Jean Moral’s dynamic
graphic style brought vigor and excitement to fashion editorials, shaping the
image of the glamorously adventurous 20th-century woman. To create this unique
collage, Moral affixed a trimmed gelatin silver print of a model wearing a Schiaparelli
jacket onto a 1935 advertisement for a French wine retailer. The graphic
dreamscape in Mode (Schiaparelli) is a perfect example of fashion’s close relationship to Surrealism in the
1930s. Like Schiaparelli, who collaborated with artists including Jean Cocteau,
Salvador Dalí, and Meret Oppenheim, Moral was at the cutting edge of this
fusion of fashion and fine art.
