At the five-square-mile
Ivanpah Solar Power Facility in the Mojave Desert, on the California-Nevada
border, 173,500 solar reflectors—each the size of two garage doors— aim
reflected sunlight at three towers to create steam. The facility produces
enough electricity to power 140,000 homes. For more than two-and-a-half years,
Jamey Stillings photo­graphed the construction of the facility, the largest of
its kind, celebrating its achievement but also raising fundamental questions
about large-scale renewable energy and its impact on the landscape.
