The astonishing precision of the daguerreotype—the first publicly announced form of photography—enthralled the world at its introduction in 1839. Named after the inventor Louis Daguerre, the exacting process utilized silver-plated sheets of copper developed in mercury fumes. Many daguerreotype portraits featured sitters proudly conveying different aspects of their lives and personalities through their poses and props—their occupation, religious affiliation, family ties, etc. This unnamed gentleman proudly displayed his sense of style by featuring his gold watch fob, top hat, and gloves, along with his coiffed hair, slick moustache, and ample sideburns.
