Object Type
ProvenanceMaurice Gobin (born 1883; Lugt 1124a) (1), no mark on this sheet; Paris, Libert sale, November 2002, lot unknown(2); [Susan Schulman Fine Prints, by 2002]; private collection, Dallas, 2003-2017; [Carolyn Bullard Fine Prints & Drawings, LLC], by 2017; to MFAH 2017

(1) Maurice Gobin (Lugt 1124a) was a merchant of prints and drawings in Paris. He entered the printing trade around 1912 with Alfred Strolin’s business, followed by his own in 1919 at 1 rue Laffite. He retired from business at the end of 1952. He published a book called Daumier Sculpteur. This mark indicates that the print was reserved for his own personal collection and not for the trade. They were often affixed to the front (sometimes on the frames, Fig. 5)

(2) According to Susan Schulman and Carolyn Bullard, the sale’s expert, Arsène Bonafous-Murat, mentioned that this Daumier print was from the Collection of Marcel Gobin. Some of the prints from the Gobin collection were marked, some were marked on the mounts and some were unmarked. See email correspondence, 12/5/2017.
